All I wanted for Christmas was you

The American pop star Mariah Carey finally reached number 1 in the U.S. Pop charts 25 years after her festive song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was originally released.

The Christmas classic has been close in previous years, but it managed to reach the summit this time mainly thanks to streams on popular streaming sites such as Spotify and Apple Music. In 1994 when the song was first released, it was as part of an EP and not a single so was not allowed to compete in the top 100 Billboard Chart. However, due to a rule change in the year 2000, it has been edging closer and closer every year to getting to that elusive number 1 spot.

Mariah Carey was naturally delighted to have acheived this major accomplishment. She tweeted “We did it!” accompanied by many emojis to express her happiness and to thank her loyal fans.

The New York-born-singer has had many other number 1s in the U.S. charts, she is now the solo artist with the most chart topping songs in musical history, in fact she only stands behind the legendary English band The Beatles, who have 20 to their names.

The karaoke classic's success is not just limited to the USA. It is hugely successful around the world and has topped charts in other countries as well. This success is in partly due to a social media drive to reach the top spot on its 25th anniversary.

The song has long been a modern Christmas classic, it has been covered multiple times by artists such as Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé and many more. Additionally, it is considered by many to be one of the greatest Christmas Songs ever, alongside Wham's “Last Christmas”, The Pogue's “Fairytale of New York” amongst others.
